REMY Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails: A Non-Invasive Option for Clearer-Looking Nails

What Is Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, is a common infection that can cause toenails to become thick, yellow, white, brittle, crumbly, or distorted. In some cases, the nail may separate from the nail bed, making trimming and routine foot care more difficult.

Fungal nail infections can persist for months or years without appropriate treatment. Because other conditions can cause similar nail changes, an examination and, when appropriate, laboratory testing can help confirm the diagnosis before treatment begins.

REMY Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus

At Dr. Martins Foot & Ankle Clinic, we offer REMY laser treatment as an option for patients concerned about fungal toenails.

REMY is a medical laser system with a specific indication for the temporary increase of clear nail in patients with onychomycosis. The laser delivers energy to the treatment area, and the treatment is intended to help improve the appearance of affected nails. The device's FDA clearance should not be interpreted as proof that it completely eliminates the fungal infection or guarantees a cure.

For patients who prefer to explore an option that does not involve taking oral antifungal medication, laser treatment may be worth discussing with a podiatrist.

Potential Benefits of REMY Laser Treatment

Patients considering laser treatment may appreciate several features of this approach:

Non-invasive treatment option: Laser treatment does not require surgical removal of the nail.

No oral medication required for the laser procedure: Patients can discuss laser treatment without automatically committing to prescription antifungal pills.

Focused treatment: The clinician directs the laser to the affected nail area according to the treatment protocol.

An additional option for nail care: Laser treatment may be considered alongside other approaches based on the patient's examination and goals.

Professional podiatric evaluation: Your treatment plan can account for nail thickness, the extent of discoloration, medical history, and possible contributing factors.

Individual results vary. Some patients may notice clearer nail growth, while others may experience limited improvement. Complete nail clearing and elimination of the underlying fungus are not guaranteed.

What Does Published Research Say About Laser Treatment?

Medical researchers have studied several types of laser treatment for onychomycosis. The findings are encouraging in some studies, but results vary according to the laser system, treatment protocol, patient population, and definition of success.

A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis by Ma and colleagues evaluated 35 studies involving 1,723 patients and 4,278 infected nails. The authors reported an overall pooled mycological cure rate of 63%. However, the studies used different laser systems and protocols, so this figure should not be presented as the expected success rate for REMY laser treatment specifically.

Another systematic review, published by Yeung and colleagues in Lasers in Medical Science in 2019, analyzed 22 prospective studies involving 755 participants. The authors found considerable variability in outcomes and concluded that the available evidence was limited, with larger and better-designed clinical trials needed.

A more recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2024 also evaluated laser treatment compared with other approaches. The authors described promising findings but emphasized the need for additional large-scale randomized controlled trials before laser treatment can be established as a standard treatment option.

What does this mean for patients? Laser treatment is an option to discuss with your podiatrist, but published evidence does not establish that every laser system produces the same results. Your clinician can help you understand the potential benefits, limitations, and alternatives.
